UROLOGIC ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP

The Urologic Oncology Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic offers multidisciplinary training in all aspects of urologic oncology. The two-year fellowship has clinical and research components in all areas of urologic oncology. The program can be tailored to reflect the fellow’s interests and requirements. Accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology, the goal of this fellowship is for candidates to be fully qualified for an academic position in urology.

Research Rotation

Our basic science research efforts are predominately focused on prostate cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma. Several nationally recognized scientists participate in these efforts with considerable funding from the National Institutes of Health. Our prostate cancer program is further supported by one of the few Special Projects in Research Excellence (SPORE) grants awarded in prostate cancer research. In addition to basic science research, opportunities exist for clinical research, giving the fellow a wide array of research opportunities all areas of the department, working with the entire faculty to provide a rich and diverse experience.

The first year of the fellowship includes basic science research in the department’s research laboratories. If necessary and desired, the fellowship can be extended to three years to allow additional time for protocol development and participation. Further laboratory research is available on short-term requests. Possible investigations could be extended to those with interests in the cancer center as part of our SPORE grant, as well as combined studies on the molecular level with the departments of immunology, genetics and pathology. Experience with urologic oncology clinical trials and translational research is also available, providing exposure to the medical and surgical aspects of treating advanced urologic malignancies, especially renal cell carcinoma, bladder and prostate cancers.

Clinical Rotation

Fellows will have full responsibility for running inpatient and outpatient urology services and will participate actively in surgery. Fellows are also expected to assist in teaching urology residents and in running monthly urology oncology multidisciplinary conferences. Full participation in the academic lecture program within the urology department is expected, as well as presentation on the regional, national and international level. The clinical service is very busy and provides an opportunity for the fellow to participate in all types of urologic oncology operative procedures including major open surgery, complex reconstruction and laparoscopic oncology. Our program is closely tied to departmental activities, and as a result, the oncology fellow is able to benefit from the depth of the department.

The goal of this advanced training program in urologic oncology is to provide further knowledge and skills beyond the expertise achieved during a urology residency program. The additional expertise includes scholarship, critical analysis of complex clinical problems, and development of advanced technical skills. The fellow will develop good skills in the planning of multidisciplinary approaches to patient care, and achieve expertise in basic and clinical scientific research methodologies.

Qualifications

You may apply to the Fellowship if you are expected to complete an approved residency program in urology. This includes, in special circumstances, qualified candidates who have completed their formal training in foreign countries and who have completed the requirements for foreign graduates. Applicants who intend to pursue an academic career will be given priority in consideration for the program.

There is one two-year position available in the Urologic Oncology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester each year on a competitive basis.
