Summary

My research interests are:

  • Developing an effective closed-loop control artificial pancreas system for patients with type 1 diabetes using insulin pump and glucose sensor technologies. Basing this on physiological models of insulin action is critical for personalized artificial pancreas system to become a reality. I have secured an R01 grant from NIH, along with Yogish Kudva, M.B.B.S., co-investigator. We are exploring other avenues to secure funding for this initiative; and have recently accepted an invitation from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in their Artificial Pancreas Consortium.

  • The primary cause of mortality in individuals with diabetes mellitus is macrovascular disease. Therapeutic interventions directed towards controlling hyperglycemia have thus far not proven beneficial towards lowering the risks for these vascular events. My overall goal is to determine the pathophysiological link between diabetes and vascular disease that could lead to rational therapy to prevent these devastating events. Initial planned projects that I am currently working on towards achieving these goals are:

    1. Investigate the effects of hyperglycemia on vascular and myocardial function in type 2 diabetes, explore the pathophysiological basis and rational mitigating therapies.
    2. Identify circulating cellular/noncellular mediators that contribute to accelerated atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.
  • An additional area of interest is exploring the role of the central nervous system and carotid bodies on glucose homeostasis in humans. We are developing precise and novel techniques with pinpoint spatial accuracy to detect central neuronal changes in vivo in the human brain.
